Helping to build
inclusive communities in Bulgaria
Frontline teams have been visiting Bulgaria regularly since 2002, supporting institutions and community-based services for people with learning and physical disabilities. These teams include Occupational Therapists and other health and social care professionals, advocacy trainers (including people with a learning disability), translators and people with practical skills.
Over the years we have built a broad network of contacts at municipal, regional and national level and strong links with non-government organisations and churches, particularly in the Vidin and Russe regions of Bulgaria. We also support the BSc degree course in Occupational Therapy at Russe University, particularly their fieldwork placement programme. In addition we occasionally host exchange visits to Essex, in order for our Bulgarian colleagues to observe and experience our local services and care models.
As Bulgaria begins the process of closing institutions and moving children and young adults into small homes in the community, we seek to share our own experiences in resettlement and community-building by offering practical and professional skills and training. We have developed an extensive range of translated materials for functional assessment, action planning, staff training and monitoring.
Frontline skills courses are interactive and challenging, including topics such as advocacy and inclusion, sensory integration, skill-building, communication etc. Working in partnership with People First (Havering) our teams often include people with learning disabilities as self-advocacy trainers.
