The Gates is a Brentwood based charitable horticultural project. We offer a unique oasis in the heart of the community.

Our aim is to value the most vulnerable people in society including those with a learning difficulty. Our dedicated team offer creative, social, educative and therapeutic activities in a safe and supportive environment.

Our History

Since 2009 we have revamped, recycled and reinvigorated the old derelict Brentwood Borough plant nursery at the rear of the London Road Cemetery. Volunteers and participants can choose from a range of activities - including: horticulture, art and craft, woodwork, site maintenance and DIY, cooking, bee keeping and social/fundraising events.

We have grown considerably over the last ten years and made huge improvements to our site and activities offered - including the floral displays in Shenfield and Brentwood High Streets.

Spring Plant Sale & BBQ

This is an opportunity to purchase a wide selection of plants, hanging baskets and homemade produce.

An opportunity to buy a wide range of home- grown organic fruit and veg.

New for 2021!

We opened for The National Garden Scheme in May and August. The public were invited to walk around the site and visit various areas of interest: The Dell, The Sensory Walk, The Mosaic Garden, The Allotments, The Apiary, The Nursery and art themed gardens.

Christmas Gifts

Visitors were invited to purchase our creative Christmas decorations.

New Construction

Since the beginning of 'lockdown' we managed to secure planning permission for the redevelopment of our old outbuildings into a shiny new classroom/tearoom/social space. The redevelopment will allow us to continue to provide meaningful activities throughout the colder months.

We started with a revamp of the outside tea hut and BBQ area.
